EVENTation

STAPLER:

I used a stapler as the concept of this design. Stapler is a mechanical device that joins pages of paper or similar material. In the design, it is seen that there is an upper and lower distinction of two wide areas.

Materials to be use in this structure are primarily steel, glass and concrete. Steel as a strong and durable material used in construction, there is no other material can match the steel’s properties. Glass is a brittle material and one of the most sophisticated and versatile materials used in the construction industry. Concrete is a building material that gains strength over time.
The structure is commonly designed having a wide range of glass and steel especially on the roof and some side of the building. Portions with concrete are particularly the base or flooring of the structure and the front view of the building.
Building that uses steel will enable the building to resist earthquake, hurricanes and other natural disease. Extensive use of glass helps in creating a very hi-tech and modern look in buildings. Concrete is a composite material, if it is mixed with gravel, sand and rock, it will form a workable paste that gradually hardens over time.
The steel is constructed on a crisscrossed pattern to support the loads of horizontal steels and glass too. Non- crisscrossed steels are purposely constructed to also support the load and to give an aesthetic feature to the design and concept of the building. The glass were utilized to give transparency between the outside environment and the interior of the edifice, and also an insulation that reduce the heat transfer. The base is fully covered with reinforced concrete to provide the building the balance that the two materials need.

SPACE:

EVENTation is a location where events take place. Activities held here are different occasions such as, birthdays, debuts, wedding ceremonies, baptismal and the likes. The structure is located on a free polluted area to give a good ambiance and good view to the users. Inside is fully air conditioned and is a closed, ventilated and wide space.

FORM:

This structure is a closed form and inspired in geometric figures. The geometric design of the edifice is fully shown in the image. starting from its base up to the top. It is not proportioned for it pursue the “form follows function”. Most of the used material is one of the “Synthetic Materials”, which is the glass.  A glass has a smooth structure and usually plain so I consider it to have a smooth surface.

TIME:

The style of the EVENTation building is in a Modernism Style. The use of ornamentation in this building is eliminated to represent its Philosophy of Architecture which is modernism. The structure is made in this style to surely preserve the Historical significance of the present time for the future.

ECONOMY:

Since the structure is in a Modernistic style, the use of Synthetic Materials were applied in this building. Materials to be used in this are primary, steel, glass and concrete.

How Technology shaping these two different discipline?: Modernism Style in Architecture and Courtship in the Present time.

REFLECTIVE and CRITICISM:

HOW TECHNOLOGY SHAPING THESE TWO DISCIPLINE?

Modernist architecture is a style of global architecture and design movement that emerged in the early – 20th century in response to accelerated industrialization and changes in both technology and society. Pursuing ‘order’ and ‘universals’ in architecture, modernism utilized advanced technology and  new materials called synthetic substances in which the use of materials such as; steels, glasses and concretes are mostly used in construction and its openness to structural innovation The modernist style in Architecture rejected the old, traditional, historical ideas and styles of structures and edifices in where putting ornaments and decorations were eliminated. Modernism is associated with the function of buildings, approached from an analytical viewpoint, as it also tells “Form Follows Function”.

Modernism developed not just in architecture but also across different fields and disciplines, as a means of accommodating and responding to the new technologies, one example is the way of courting in the present time.

Courtship in making a relationship is something that has changed and has been modernized in the present time too. Before, in Filipino tradition, courting has a very big importance on the value of respecting the woman and her family and strictly adhering with proper rules set by society for pursuing a lady. Courting now became invaded by technology.  Now that we are in a modernized world, almost everything has been changed too and those were influenced by technology.

HOW CAN I RELATE MODERNISM STYLE IN ARCHITECTURE AND IN THE WAY OF COURTSHIP IN THE PRESENT TIME?

Since Modernism emphasized function, simplicity, and rationality, and created new forms of expression with a new aesthetic, it follows the “FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION”. Just like on the way of courtship nowadays, a man now usually do courtship through establishing new ways on expressing themselves in order to pursue a lady, specifically by the use of technology. By then the sense of pursuing a lady become literally “SIMPLE” compare to the old fashioned way of romance. These has allowed courtship to be a little more lenient on youngsters. In Modernism Style of Architecture, it focuses more on simplicity and elimination of ornaments and the effort of putting decorations. Like for instance, in courting, a man before would be so willing to pursue a lady through harana, written letters, and many more, now that we are in the modernized world, the suitor could sing for a girl through video chat, voice message or through phone, instead of writing personal letters, they tend to post or just send what they want to say through social media, and I could say that, it is “SIMPLE” compared to the old schooled type of courtship. In Architecture, Modernism follows simplicity and as Adolf Loos stated that “Ornament is a Crime”, with “crime”, he meant it as a waste of money, labor and materials. For him, as modern man appreciated simplicity, ornament had no meaning, place, or value within ‘modern’ society. In his works modernist architects regarded ornamentation as a symbol of the past, traditional, historical styles and rejected it in favor of clean structures with plain, un- ornamented surfaces, In the modern way or courtship (through the use of social media) it is same that “A symbols of the past, traditional, historical styles” are rejected in the modern times.

The idea of technology and how it can drastically change daily life and society is something that somehow makes improvement to the world and gives flaw or lessens the importance in some other areas of ideas. Obviously, these are not necessarily formal, and the basis may differ from case to case and from place to place.

Modern is good of shore but old always is the value and rich.

Utopia: Year 2118 version of Rizal Park

Can anyone define what is perfection?

Our professor on Theory of Architecture states that, ” perfection depends on how the perceiver view it”. I indeed agree. We could view anything as perfect, but still others may not seem it as too. Or they may see anything as perfect and we don’t.

Perfection is something that satisfies our standards and desires. It is a condition that gratifies our expectations. It is a state of being completely flawless.

The world is immensely changing. But is it for the better or for WORSE? As humans, we literally want perfection. Right? We strive for perfection in multiple ways. We want everything to be perfect. Because being perfect leads us to being BETTER, it leads us on a “problem-free” world. That is what we want. Just imagine we are in the context of savoring the world of UTOPIA. An imagined community wherein it possesses highly desirable or nearly perfect qualities for its citizens.

The image above is the year 2118 version of Rizal Park, located at Roxas Boulevard Manila. As you can see, the picture is something that would define utopia. I believe that this magical perception of this particular site is possibly one hundred years from the present. The colors are used to unify the park and the city itself. The various formations of buildings integrate the definition of the improved and astonishing future. The transportation is elevated into something that distinguishes the high implementation of technology. And lastly, since utopia is something that would satisfy the needs of everyone, it is must that despite of high intellect technology, the needs of better environment must be in place and context too.

The combination of colors is something that looks warm to the eyes, one thing that lacks in a city. The geometric forms and combination of these buildings provides the future users to experience something different from the usual. And since Manila suffers from a wide problematic range of traffic, I visualize the city to have an air-inspired transportation, and it is not just a typical kind of transportation, in each skyway, it could be utilized by two transportation vehicle at the same time. One more thing that makes us suffer is the environmental deficiencies. We lack the green environment and we tend to forget that sense and importance of having it.

As an Architecture student, I fully engaged myself that in the near future this world will experience a utopic world that everyone would love to have. This may not happen in a century I could possibly be in, but still my heart is hoping that it will definitely happen. With ourselves who fully pledge on having a unified and perfect world, through great minds, different professionals and citizens of a nation and most importantly the way we give importance on  architecture, a UTOPIC WORLD is really POSSIBLE.

Intramuros: “TIME MACHINE OF SEDUCTIVE REMINISCENT”

INTRAMUROS: ‘The Walled City’

Intamuros is an urban district and historic walled city within Metro Manila. The word INTRAMUROS came from the Spanish word that means “within the walls,”.  Year 1586 it was designed by Juan Macias and on the year 1854 it was renovated under the  supervision of Architect Luciano Oliver. Since it was built in the year 1571, it is categorized  as Renaissance and Baroque Architecture.

Intramuros is one of the most significant historical sites in Manila and listed as one of twelve endangered cultural heritage sites. It is located at the capital of the Philippines and is often visited by international and Local tourists from all over the world. This tourist site captures the past and serves as an alive depiction of the Historical Colonization of the Spaniards, Americans and Japaneses centuries ago.

C’mon and let’s create our own tour!

  • September 19, 2018 was my first time to enter Intramuros Manila. As a probinsyana I was quite stoked because a new ambience to encounter has come!

The welcome arc of Intramuros! Systems of Architecture: “Programmatic System”: (Aspiration, Parameter and History)The Purpose of Intramuros is to provide the Spanish Government a defense system against the invaders. The building is limited only to the privileged people of Spain to protect their colony. Intramuros is remarkably rich with historical sites that serves as nostalgic experiences to its tourists.

C’mon and lets create our own tour!

•  If I was not mistaken, this was the first structure to see as we go beyond the welcome arch of Intramuros. We saw there busy people, e-trikes and vehicles, taken with the picture, a civilian guard wearing a blue attire called “Guardia Civil Uniform” serves as the traffic enforcer.

Systems of Architecture: “Formal System” whereas in relating the structure to form, the picture above (DOLE) followed FENESTRATION wherein the windows of the structure were arranged systematically  and is proportioned to each column.
  • As we walk on the street and busy appreciating the beauty of this historical site, I had the urge of capturing this lamp post, and I don’t know why, maybe I just want to or possibly because the destiny knew that I would be needing this on my blog. Haha!

Systems of Architecture: “Technological System” under UTILITY (Lighting System) > it concerns in the design may it be a natural lighting or an ELECTRICAL LIGHTING. The Lamp posts around Intramuros provide the tourists a good and improved appearance of the area to perform their activities or as they walk in the street.

•  We went to San Agustin Church “The Wedding Capital of the Philippines” the exact date was on October 27, 2018. On that blessed day, a couple decided to live happily ever after. It may not seen clearly the white cloth designed near the wedding aisle, but it was all arranged perfectly & ideally. Best wishes to them!

Systems of Architecture: “Spatial Architecture” under the category of SEQUENCE: it is shown in the image above the arrangement of pews. It is in series and is in a spacious manner where the users can move with according to the activity held in a church.
  • This yellow architecture is a warm structure that caught my heart. I love the curves and the curved lines of the corbel sends me comfort and familiarity of something I couldn’t picture out in my head anymore.

Systems of Architecture:  “Technological System” under STRUCTURE: it is seen in the architecture above  how aesthetic is the outcome of the combined corbel and cantilever. These two depicts the ancient designs of Intramuros.

•  This place, Palacio Del Gobernador is  absolutely one of the enormous structure located at the “Walled City”. There are six (6) Philippine flags in there. Four of it are placed at the fronted entrance and the two are located on both sides of the building.

The space of structure is much greater than typical spaces seen in Intramuros. IMAGE BY INTREPID WANDERER VIA GOOGLE (link to https://intrepidwanderer.com/2014/03/palacio-del-gobernador-in-)
  • As you can see, there it is, one of the most known and recognized coffee shop among young and adults, Starbucks! There are three flags, evidently one of it is the Philippine flag.

Systems of Architecture:  “Contextual System” under CULTURE (shared art forms): The context of this structure demonstrates the culture of the past Spanish era. Culture is also used in Architecture for present use.
  • It was an astonishing experience entering the entrance of Fort Santiago. I felt like I belong to the 15th and 16th Century. This is really an amazing structure, a detailed and Historical one!

Systems of Architecture:”Formal System” under SCALE AND PROPORTION:  we often compare our body size to a specific object or a structure to determine the relationship of  these two things of different size, this is how Scale and Proportion is involved in Architecture.
  • This Rajah Sulayman’s Theater is a wide and a spacious part of Fort Santiago in Intramuros. Because of soil compaction between the narrow spaces of the structure, it allows moss to grow. And for me it adds aesthetic features on it.

Principles Of Design:  “Human Body and Relative Dimensions” under ERGONOMICS (Human body and Environment): It is the Rajah Sulayman’s Theater, I prefer this as under Ergonomics since I can see that it focuses more on its Function and use and it is spacious thta is evidently important in a theater.
  • The walls that cover the whole Intramuros is immensely designed for massive defense against the intruders. It was great and altitudinous depiction of privilege and power of the Spaniards.

Principles Of Design:  “Basic Concepts of Space Dynamics” under TERRITORIALITY: The walls stand eight feet wide and 22 feet in height that totally covers the 64 hectare Intramuros.  The Spaniards controls and delimits the area of space that rules the Filipinos. Its purpose is to defend the Spanish colony of Manila against the intrusions of other Foreign colonies. It was built to inform everyone that it is the Spaniard’s enclave and territory.
  • While roaming around the place, there are miniatures of structures inside, but what caught our attention was a Policeman sitting in front, my friend told me that the man is crying. I guess he had noticed us so he insisted to cover those teary eyes of him.

Systems of Architecture: “Technological System” under STRUCTURE (Arc and Vault): A part of the Baluarte De Santa Barbara, there is a semi-“Dome”. This structure is commonly known as Arc and Vault that creates a roof or ceiling.
  • At my first glance at San Agustin Church, I thought that it was just an ordinary church I used to see in the province. But as we go inside and explore this phenomenal church, I was truly amazed by its architecture!

The Aesthetic Field > Phenomenology of Aesthetic Experience: There are Four Factors of Aesthetic Field, ART OBJECT (San Agustin Church) , PERCEIVER (Tourists)  , ARTIST (in 1586 it was designed by Juan Macias and after the occupation of British forces (1762) it was renovated by the supervision of Architect Luciano Oliver in 1854) , PERFORMER (Agustinians, Religious People). These four factors continuously influence each other by interconnecting their parts and purposes. The interaction of the four factors in terms of social, cultural, technological and historical influences distinguishes how they communicate qualitatively different from everyday experience and similar to other exceptional states of mind.
  • The San Agustin Museum was once a monastery. The hallways on the left are lined with huge paintings and on the right side, it has an amazing design of fenestration.
LRM_EXPORT_66560682377841_20181101_113332675
Systems of Architecture: “Technological System” under STRUCTURE (Arc and Vault): This area of the San Agustin Museum follows the  Arc and vault of Technological System. A vault is a ceiling of brick, stone, or concrete built in the principle of the arch. Vault  is like a  semi-cylindrical extension of an arch.
  • Colegio de San Juan De Letran is a private Roman Catholic Dominican. The simple combination of colors makes it to have an extra fantastic result.
LRM_EXPORT_94773697797094_20181030_235437203
OBEJCTIVE FACTS:  Principles Of Design:  “RHYTHM” (Repetition and Pattern): Rhythm is a concept of systematic repetition and pattern. This building has its repetitive design. The repetition of design and pattern covers the building and that makes it under Rhythm. The blended design of patterns appeared unified as a whole.
  • While roaming around the street of Intramuros, there we can see in every structure a Spanish-Architecture inspired buildings. Some of these structures are residential and others are for business related purposes.
CollageMaker_20181102_183511477[1].jpg
Reading the Images (4 Planes) > CONTEXTUAL PLANE: Since Intramuros was under the Spanish Colonial Government on 15th to 16th century, the buildings and structures located in this prestigious historical site were inspired by colonial Architecture specifically the Spanish Architecture. The intention of constructing these buildings is to preserve the culture taught us by the invaders.
  • There was a story before we have captured this tremendous church –  The Manila Cathedral. The guard blocked us from entering the area, but it is like we are magically spelled by this structure, we respectfully ask for his permission to take a pic and luckily he allowed us. It was an eye, capturing depiction of aesthetic, from the mixed shapes, and the combination of color used, for me, it is magically perfect!
LRM_EXPORT_71177486656985_20181101_125929271
Reading the Images (4 Planes) > ICONIC PLANE: It deals with the relationship of signifier and signified (SEMIOTIC). The image above, the “Manila Cathedral”, with the dome-like structure on top signifies perfection, eternity and heaven, and that associates with the purpose of the structure being in a religious affiliation and in with the relation to its users. Because of the particular features, aspects and qualities of the structure, it was easily identified that it is affiliated with religious activities.
  • I could say that this street in Intramuros is something that is evidently unusual. The distorted jumbled wiring, an abandoned and rustic residential, busy people and chaotic setting, that is what I call “BEAUTY BEYOND DETERIORATION”!
LRM_EXPORT_94929074603445_20181030_235712580
Reading the Images (4 Planes) > EVALUATIVE OR AXOLOGICAL PLANE: For some, the “what’s happening” in the  picture above could say that there is a non-aesthetic context in it. But what has influenced me in studying the theories in Architecture is that, “definition of aesthetic depends on the perception of beauty, of the perceiver”  and I see the picture above as the most valuable and worthiest structure I have seen in Intramuros.

It is good to spend time in reminiscing the life of yore. Through exploring Intramuros, I felt connected to the old times. It is like I belong to the past events of the 15th and 16th century. The walls of Intramuros, each old and modern residential and retail establishments, the lamp post scattered purposely to lighten our way, the churches, calesas, the Guardia civil, and all the historical sites all over Intramuros, it all has a story to tell. The hot rays of the sun, the air that dumps on our skin, the tenderness and affection we had encountered, these are all WORTH IT!

I am encouraging everyone who would see my blog to come and visit Inramuros “THE WALLED CITY” and enjoy the 15th and 16th century culture and colonization!

WHAT A PERSONAL SPACE IS FOR ME???

As an Architecture student, I do really love making activities that enhance my creativity and imagination skills. There are two reasons, first is because I truly believe that these two plays really a big part in conceptualizing and making an idea, and which is truly needed for my chosen profession. The second is that utilizing these two lets me express the feelings, emotions and experiences I couldn’t put into words.

Picture below is a zine. (cover page)

20181020_081256(0)

A zine is a self-published work that somehow looks like a little magazine and that with a twist.

As we are assigned on making one on Theory of Architecture subject, relating our natural perception of our personal spaces, what comes first to my mind is that, how am I going to present uniquely my personal spaces while showing up my personality through zine?

So just like what I’ve mentioned earlier, I as an Architecture student, I must possess and enable my creativity and imagination in making an idea or work.

My zine is inspired by Instagram Stories. It is massively popular among young and adults, so I used it as the main concept of my zine. IG Stories as we know, contain what is currently happening on a particular day of ours or what has had happened before— LITERALLY OUR STORY. And I suppose my concept of my zine and the needed content itself correlates.

WHAT IS SPACE?

My natural perception of space is something that makes me who I really am. I don’t hesitate to do the things that I want and that makes me who “me” and as long as it makes me happy.

Pictures below are the “HIGHLIGHTS” of my IG Stories of My Personal Spaces.

Those pics above indeed happened in reality. Those captured moments of mine were my forever treasures and are the some of my featured events of my own book for I know that those made me genuinely happy and are unforgettable. At any moment of my adventures, I am spending enough time that consistently satisfies me. It is because I was able to find myself on my personal space.

Every time I am doing the things and stuff I like where no one disturbs me, I believe that’s what a “Personal Space” is. Because personally, I see Personal Space as something where you can express oneself as a whole.  I was able to express myself and know myself more. You feel comfortable and secure, something like that!

“ADVENTUROUS” that is how my family and friends call me.

I AM A RISK TAKER  AND I AM SO WILLING TO TRY NEW EXPERIENCES ON MY PERSONAL SPACE!

KNIGHT ARMORED WITH RAINBOW HEART~

Ever want to experience the feeling of being protected by a man fighting for you in the midst of trouble or risk?

A man to respect you wholeheartedly?

A man who practice self-control and work to overcome weaknesses?

A man who stays faithful?

A man who’s willing to serve other?

A man who have clean heart?

A man who is always be truthful?

Etc.

So technically, I am referring to a KNIGHT!

Then who do not want one could find their knight? Hmm..

Well comprehensively, a classic image of a knight could be a soldier who fights the enemies of his lord and king on horseback whereas upholding the principles of chivalry. Traditionally, knighthood might be attained by solely a choose category of individuals. However many modernist ways have arisen to become a knight.

WHAT DO WE NORMALLY FANTASIZE WHEN WE HEAR “A KNIGHT IN SHINING ARMOUR”?

It could be a tall, handsome, with a buffed body and a so manly man, right? Those are just few of the physical characteristics we frequently assume when we heard the phrase “a knight in shining armour”. Because one way or another, in honestly speaking, THOSE ARE WHAT WE “WANT” or WHAT WE DREAM OF HAVING ONE.

SO THEY SAY CHIVALRY IS DEAD~~~

Having gay friends made me feel that I am worth of having the attention we often longing for straight guys, they can be our source of support and inspiration. They will lead us in the right direction and will not add drama to our already dramatic life. Most importantly, they will love you for who you are and no matter what you did, do and will do. So for me, as long as my gay friends exist, I can say with conviction that CHIVALRY IS NOT DEAD!

SEEN IN THE IMAGE BELOW, A KNIGHT’S HEADGEAR WORN BY MR. MARK VICTOR PAGLINAWAN.

As tasked of making an ALTER EGO of our partner, what first comes to my mind is a medieval soldier. My partner, Mr. Mark Victor Paglinawan is a proud member of the LGBT community. What I made to symbolize his alter ego is a knight’s headgear. Sounds contradicting? But I see this guy as a depiction of a chivalrous man. He may not characterize the physical traits of a knight, but I see knighthood in his inner self. He is a man of his words. To the point that I admire him more than any other guys out there.  For almost two months of knowing this valiant man, I could say he is way better than any of those guys I’ve met. I admire him for being brave in all aspects. I admire him for showing respect to his friends; may it be a lady or gent. I admire this man for showcasing what a real KNIGHT is despite of being in the third sex.

There is so much more of saying “I AM A MAN” than proving it. Well many guys can claim that they have the traits of being a man, but does do them even practice of being one?

NOT ALL REALLY.

*** I am more inspired by the lyrics on the song “SIRENA” by Gloc9

“KUNG MINSAN MAS LALAKE PA SA LALAKE ANG BAKLA” and that BEING GAY DOESN’T MAKE YOU LESS OF A MAN!

And I, THANK YOU!
